When live adaptation matters
Lookback’s documented LiveShare and Interview modes differ from its Tasks and SelfTest modes. That is relevant when the researcher needs to intervene, clarify or involve observers while the session runs. Device requirements are method-specific, so do not assume that “works on mobile” means an identical setup for every mode. [S34]
A live conversation is useful only when it matches the question. It is not automatically more truthful than an unattended task, and it can change participant behavior. Document the intended intervention before deciding which workflow to purchase.
When the narrated attempt is the deliverable
Userbrain’s Figma instructions describe task-based think-aloud recordings. That route fits a request such as “show me what happened while the participant attempted this prototype task.” Lookback also documents qualitative unattended recordings; absence of a live moderator does not turn either workflow into purely quantitative research. Review the actual required outputs, including whether you need a download rather than an in-platform viewing link. We do not infer export rights for every trial and paid plan from a product’s general marketing page.
Separate subscription commitment from recruitment
The cited Lookback Freelance offer is $299 annually with ten sessions; its pricing page says paid billing is annual-only. Its trial is a different offer. Userbrain’s PAYG panel price is $45 for a session with its incentive included. These numbers describe different bundles and should not be placed in a “cheapest monthly software” league table. A Lookback session allowance is not the same as an incentive-paid participant. Its recruitment explanation separates recruiting fees, participant incentives and a 6% incentive-management charge when it distributes incentives. Do not add the same incentive again to a vendor rate that already includes it. [S12]
Use one identical brief
For both candidates, specify the method, number of participants, own-audience versus recruited-audience route, device, and desired evidence artifact. Then enter the actual software payment, participant charges, separate incentives and internal time in the budget calculator.
For a one-off narrated task, a PAYG route may avoid an unused software commitment. For an ongoing live research workflow, the ability to conduct that method may matter more than a lower per-recording charge. These are scenario-based editorial judgments, not guarantees that either product is better for every team.
A shortlist with a clear reason
Shortlist Lookback when you need its documented live qualitative workflow or its broader live/unattended combination. Shortlist Userbrain when its recorded-task route meets the brief. Use the tool picker to keep an annual-commitment constraint visible rather than discovering it after selecting a product.
